writers write towards a specific point, examining a claim:
claims of fact: a statement that can be proven or verified; focuses on facts in dispute
claims of value: express an opinion or judgment about an idea being better or more desirable than another; subjective and cannot be proved definitively(e.g right or wrong)
claims of policy: use verbs should, must, ought; offer more than one solution to a problem; subjective and cannot be proved
the supports used should contain reason, evidence, and appeals
reasons by definition back up a claim, also explains why an author’s view is reasonable or correct
the reason alone is not support for the claim, there must be evidence to support it
a claim is something you seek to prove
an opinion is something which may have already been proven
evidence: claims, facts, opinions, expert opinions, statistics, personal experiences, examples
appeals: to needs or to values
needs: physiological, psychological(belongingness, love, community etc.)
values: a principle or quality considered important, desirable, or valuable(liberty, equality, justice)
rebuttal: anticipates and argues against potential counterarguments by poking holes in their points
